Interior Painting in Toronto: What to Include in Your Quote

Two interior painting quotes can cover very different work. One may include walls only; another may include ceilings, trim, repairs and priming. Before comparing prices for your Toronto house or condo, make sure you are comparing the same surfaces, preparation and finishes.

See the preparation behind the finished room

The images from Painthor's website show a finished dining room and wall sanding in progress. The finished space is what the homeowner sees every day; the preparation is part of the work that should be defined before painting begins. Ask which repairs, sanding and priming are included for your surfaces.

Start with the surfaces, not just the room names

“Paint the living room” can mean walls only, or it can include the ceiling, baseboards, window trim and doors. Before requesting quotes, list the surfaces you want included in each room. Note closets, stairwells and any areas you want left untouched. Photos of the rooms and damaged areas help us understand the work before arranging a site visit.

Match preparation to the condition of the home

A clean wall in good condition needs a different scope from a wall with peeling paint, old wallpaper adhesive or uneven repairs. Ask the contractor to identify the preparation included in the quote: cleaning, patching, sanding, caulking and priming where required. Larger repairs or hidden damage should be discussed and approved before additional work proceeds.

Choose finishes around how the room is used

A busy hallway, bathroom and living room do not necessarily need the same finish. Tell us about cleaning needs, traffic and the look you prefer. Your proposal should name the agreed paint products and finishes, rather than leaving the materials open to interpretation. Colour changes and existing surface conditions also affect the application needed.

Plan access and protection before the first day

For an occupied home, discuss furniture, artwork, floor protection and which rooms must remain accessible. Condo projects may also require elevator reservations, management approval and permitted work hours. Confirm who handles each task so the crew can begin with the space ready and the agreed protection in place.

Compare the complete scope

Two prices are only comparable when they cover the same surfaces, preparation and products. Ask what is excluded and how changes will be approved. A clear written scope gives both you and the contractor a shared reference throughout the job.
